Gamo Air Guns
Air gun enthusiasts may have heard of Gamo’s products, especially their high-quality pellets and air rifles. However, there is a richer history behind the brand that many don’t know about. The background story not only helped Gamo become the world’s largest air gun pellet manufacturer but its weapons are also considered world-class.
In 1889, Gamo was first founded as Antonia Casas, S.A. in Barcelona, specializing in lead products. It was only in 1959 that Industrias El Gamo S.A. came into existence, and that was nine years after Antonia Casas Serra ventured into making air gun pellets. The first Gamo air rifles were sold to the public in 1961, receiving critical acclaim for their superior quality.
After two years, Gamo exported guns to the U.K. and started building credibility, eventually leading to a dealer’s network reaching 40 countries by 1970. After another decade or so, Gamo managed to cement relations with other manufacturers in Europe, the U.K., and the U.S. It would also move the pellet factory to a new location, along with the wood processing building that makes the stocks.
Gamo USA was born in 1995 as a convenient way to import Gamo air rifles into the U.S. through this new company.
During the second millennium, Gamo went through some changes in ownership. MCH invested in Gamo in 2007, but then sold it, BSA Guns, and BSA Optics to Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherill & Co. The latter is a New York-based private equity firm. In addition, the new owners acquired Daisy Outdoor Products in 2016.
Today, Gamo’s air guns are found in at least 50 countries. The company still strives to improve its designs and provide the best products possible.
Gamo Wildcat Whisper .22 cal, Black
This Gamo Wildcat Whisper air rifle is an affordable weapon that fires .22 caliber pellets at 975 FPS. Velocities like this are standard for air rifles, as .22s will travel slower than .177 caliber pellets. Despite this, the heavier and larger projectiles retain more energy and cause more tissue damage.
Therefore, if you want to hunt for small game, this gun is an excellent choice. The .177 sometimes lacks sufficient power, so air rifle hunters have often opted for larger calibers even for small game. If you don’t intend to consume the prey, as with pest control, the larger pellets still perform well, leading to more humane kills.
Gamo has continuously updated its guns, resulting in the Inert Gas Technology (IGT) piston. This component is the next step in air gun technology, replacing spring-operated mechanisms entirely. It has many advantages over the older system.
Most importantly, there’s no spring to experience fatigue, allowing the air rifle to fire at maximum velocity even after staying cocked for hours. It works in colder weather, as springs are more sensitive to temperature changes. Cocking piston air rifles also feel much smoother.
The IGT even reduces the vibrations produced by firing, which have been known to damage accessories.
Despite reaching high velocities, this Wildcat Whisper doesn’t produce a thunderous report. Gamo has attached Whisper sound suppression technology to the barrel. This innovation can reduce sound by up to 52%. Prey and neighbors will find it harder to detect your air rifle firing.
Compared to smaller options, .22 caliber pellets will produce a softer sound than.177 due pellets to lower speeds. Therefore, you can expect the sound pollution to be significantly reduced.
Gamo paid close attention to user comfort as well, starting with an adjustable trigger. Users can adjust how hard they pull to fire the loaded pellet, contributing to increased accuracy.
Another lever inside the trigger guard functions as the safety catch. This design has been used for over a century but still endures thanks to its effectiveness.
The synthetic all-weather Monte-Carlo stock is light but durable, perfect for hunters and recreational shooters. The raised comb helps users align their heads with the scope for less strain while aiming. There’s also a rubberized butt pad to eliminate some of the perceived recoil.

Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 Air Rifle .22 cal, Black
The Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 air rifle is close to the Wildcat Whisper, but it has many parts the latter lacks. At first glance, you can see that these features justify the more expensive cost, as the Whisper Fusion Mach 1 has advanced features inside and out.
Gamo equips each of these rifles with an IGT Mach 1 piston with a 33mm cylinder, much stronger than the standard IGT technology. It propels .22 caliber pellets at 1,100 FPS, something the cheaper models are incapable of doing. Thus, your shots will transfer even more energy to targets.
The barrel has Whisper Fusion technology, which reduces the report by almost 90%. Only sensitive ears will hear you shooting targets, letting you discreetly take care of pests on your property. As the quietest of Gamo’s Whisper technology, you’ll find it difficult to surpass.
The fluting on the barrel cuts some weight down and cools the barrel passively. Inside, the polymer jacketing protects the rifling. But do note that you must choose ammunition wisely to keep the coating intact.
Aiming is done with the iron sights or an included 3-9x40mm scope. The latter is mounted onto Recoil Reducing Rails, extending the optic’s service life and preventing excessive shaking when aiming down the scope. The iron sights consist of an adjustable rear sight and fixed front globe sight, both with fiber-optic inserts for increased visibility.
While you get a scope in the package, the 11mm rails are compatible with many other scopes that use the 11mm dovetail rail mounting system. Please make sure you use proper air rifle scopes, as these are built to withstand vibrations that firearm optics can’t.
Competitive shooters and hunters both agree that trigger pull is essential for making good shots. The Whisper Fusion Mach 1 comes with a two-stage Custom Action Trigger. Each stage is independently adjustable to create the perfect experience while shooting.
Safety is controlled via the lever in front of the trigger, which you turn from side to side. There’s also an automatic cocking safety system built into the rifle.
Gamo’s knowledge of rifle stocks is extensive, and this all-weather nylon stock shows why. A Monte Carlo stock, it has a raised comb for optimal scope usage, as you’ll need some support when using telescopic sights. The butt pad reduces perceived recoil by 74% too.

Gamo Viper Express Air Shotgun & Rifle, Gray/Black
You may know of the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, a rimfire caliber that hunters also use for small game. However, the existence of “rat shot” or “snake shot” is less well-known. This Gamo Viper Express Air Shotgun & Rifle can fire these rounds and even .22 caliber air gun pellets.
Rat shot refers to .22 L.R. cartridges that don’t contain a solid slug. Rather, these cartridges have a plastic case at the tip containing tiny balls made of alloy or lead. In effect, it turns a .22 L.R. rifle into a shotgun.
Gamo’s Viper Express can fire both out of the same barrel, making it a type of express rifle. This term refers to guns shooting shotgun and rifle cartridges, but usually out of two different barrels. However, this can be considered a unique example.
The Viper Express air shotgun and rifle fires rat shot by default. With an included .22 pellet adapter, you can fire the air gun pellets without further modification.
Gamo elected to go back a few decades in terms of the technology used because the IGT doesn’t hit the primers in the .22 shotshells. This Viper Express is spring-operated, which unfortunately doesn’t square up the best against the new IGT technology. But the springs are easily replaced and still work in most environments.
The barrel is polymer-jacketed for endurance, but it’s smoothbore to allow for a gentle shot-shell spread. There is some fluting for increased cooling, though the Whisper technology is missing.
Instead of the CAT, you get a two-stage Smooth Action Trigger. This SAT isn’t adjustable, but you’ll find it excellent for pest control, as you’re so close to the creature the trigger pull won’t matter.
There’s an 11mm dovetail rail on the receiver that works with many air rifle scopes. Otherwise, there’s only a front bead sight for aiming. This configuration is what you can find on shotguns.
The ambidextrous synthetic Monte Carlo stock is all-weather and durable, withstanding field use easily. You can carry the air express rifle with you and expect it to survive unscathed.
When firing this weapon, please don’t chamber .22 LR FMJ cartridges. Only use rat shot and .22 caliber pellets, as the company states.

- 750 FPS with .22 L.R. rat shot and 725 FPS with .22 caliber pellets
- .22 caliber pellets and .22 L.R. rat shot
- Break-action
- Single-shot only
- Express rifle
Pros
- Fires snake shot for pest control
- High-quality barrel
- Comes with adapter
Cons
- Must reload after each shot
- Spring may not work in colder weather
Gamo Varmint Air Rifle, Black
“Varmint” and “vermin” may sound alike, but don’t always refer to the same troublesome animals or pests. Vermin tend to be smaller creatures like rats, squirrels, and moles. However, varmint is usually reserved for coyotes, weasels, and other larger animals.
A varmint rifle is designed for hunting down these animals. While firearms have calibers intended for this task, air rifles like this Gamo Varmint Air Rifle are in .177 caliber. It’s not a good idea to scoff at such a small pellet, especially since it travels at 1,250 FPS.
This Varmint Air Rifle is spring piston-operated, which means it doesn’t use Gamo’s IGT pistons. The traditional spring action is still reliable since many owners who own a varmint rifle are concerned with affordability and practicality. Air gun springs can be replaced if they lose power, so there are still reasons these older mechanisms endure.
There’s an adjustable trigger for comfortable and smooth shooting. After making some adjustments, you’ll find the operation much closer to your liking. A trigger pull weight you like will make a huge difference in accuracy.
You can also find the safety lever in front of the trigger within the steel trigger guard. To further safeguard the user and those around them, Gamo incorporated an automatic cocking safety.
The Varmint Air Rifle features no iron sights, so aiming is best done with the Gamo 4x21mm scope. The scope itself is fog-proof and shockproof, and users will find it always delivers precision shots
The barrel is fluted for less weight and cooling efficiency. The internal surface is covered in a polymer jacket that protects the rifle. Measuring 17.8 inches, it’s more than enough to deliver the 1,250 FPS this rifle is capable of reaching.
The all-weather stock is made of glass-filled nylon polymer, a material that doesn’t crack, splinter, or break down easily. Having dual raised cheekpieces helps users aim down the scope better. There is a rubberized butt pad attached to the rear to reduce perceived recoil.
Specifications
- 1,250 FPS
- .177 caliber pellets
- Break-action
- Single-shot only
- Express rifle
Pros
- High muzzle velocity
- High-quality barrel
- Comfortable stock
Cons
- Must reload after each shot
- Spring may not work optimally in colder weather
Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X GEN 2 Multi-Shot Air Rifle .22 Cal, Black
The Swarm Maxxim 10X Gen 2 is one of the few multi-shot air rifle designs on the market. The magazine right behind the barrel holds 10 rounds, though you still have to break the action open after every shot. Nevertheless, it fires much faster than single-shot-only guns.
Gamo’s IGT piston replaces the typical spring action on this air rifle, allowing it to reach velocities of 1,000 FPS with .22 caliber pellets. Without having to deal with the temperamental steel, the piston can maintain full muzzle velocity even after staying cocked for hours. It also works in cold weather, cocking much smoother than springs.
The barrel features the Whisper Maxxim sound dampening system. Whisper Maxxim is in between Whisper and Whisper Fusion, so the report reduction is still impressive. You won’t have to worry about scaring prey away when hunting.
The barrel is coated with polymer to send pellets in a straight line. The fluting on the outside doesn’t just lighten it, but it helps the steel cool off after many shots.
Even when shooting quickly, accuracy won’t be a problem after adjusting the Custom Action Trigger. The two stages can be set to your preferences, and that’s how accurate shots start.
Mounted to the rifle is a 3-9x40mm Gamo scope, attached to the 11mm dovetail Recoil Reducing Rail. It isolates the optic from the rifle via polymer pieces. When fewer vibrations reach the scope, its service life is extended immensely.
The rail also improves your accuracy since the recoil doesn’t shake the scope as much. Your shoulder may feel the push, but your eyes won’t see it too much.
The stock has a Monte Carlo design and is made of automotive-grade glass-filled nylon polymer. It will endure all weather conditions too. Near the muzzle is a textured section for your other hand.
Attached to the stock is a recoil-reducing butt pad.
Specifications
- 1,000 FPS
- .22 caliber pellets
- Break-action
- Ten shots in the magazine
Pros
- High muzzle velocity
- High-quality barrel
- Multi-shot design
Cons
- No extra rails for customization
- Cocked every shot
